- Description:
- Music programs in correctional institutions illuminate the paradoxical volley between inmate humanism and security apparatus ideology. This study examines the rehabilitative benefits of the arts and the security apparatus’s rationale for disallowing musical activities within correctional facilities. The author argues that the negative justification utilized to devalue the arts requires dehumanization of those individuals with creative artistic identity. In doing so, the author argues that humanism is imperative to criminal rehabilitation, from which the arts and, specifically, music is the empathic neurological conduit administered through a peer–mentored curriculum. In contrast, the author maintains that arbitrary safety rationalism is a means for authoritarian security apparatus to disrupt and detract from positive rehabilitation options and that this false rationalism created through safety and security rhetoric is sociologically counter– intuitive.

- At a critical stage when oral-systemic health studies link gum disease to other serious health problems, dental laser technology offers dentists and patients valuable benefits to help curtail growing health risks. However, adoption of this technology continues to be extremely slow. To increase dental lasers’ awareness and adoption, the author of this thesis proposes an organizational strategy, based on Edward Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge, integrating selected ISO 9001:2015 Standard’s clauses into an existing medical device Quality Management System (QMS), utilizing the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) methodology. These are explicit quality clauses critically lacking in the current medical device QMS. This integration of organizational context, risk-based thinking, and knowledge management validates Deming’s philosophy as relevant to the adoption of discontinuous innovation such as dental lasers and dental-care quality improvement for practitioners and patients. This value-added organizational strategy seeking to delight stakeholders is recommended through PDSA’s re-iterative process approach.

- Description:
- Continual improvement pioneer and visionary scholar in academia, Dr. W. Edwards Deming had been very vocal in saying that transformation is necessary in a prevailing style of management. The management transformation is needed in this age and time where intense customer demands and technological advances are becoming the norm in the business community. These unending changes require new leadership mindset that is required in instituting and communicating the strategic direction of an organization. This investigation aims at utilizing to apply a strategy deployment tool, Hoshin Kanri to an organization’s continual improvement. Developed by the Japanese companies, Hoshin Kanri is a strategic planning system to communicate company goals to the employees. It is a framework for both policy formulation and policy implementation. The review and evaluation results of data produced from the research indicate that Hoshin Kanri can be successfully implemented in a medium-sized medical device distribution company.

- Description:
- Today’s for-profit business supply chain is driven by the insular objective of maximizing profits and shareholder value. This financial slant is proving hazardous, as today’s supply chain construct is evermore linearized, frangible, and extended. The fulcrum of profit and loss is weighted disproportionately over that of the supplier’s quality, stability, and assuredness. This has led to unforeseen interruptions in the supply chain and costly recovery actions. Common supply chain quality metrics and analytics are deficient in presenting all of the business intelligence necessary for assembling and maintaining a robust and secure supplier base. This study presents that supplier quality management and strategic decisions must expand beyond the singularity of historical supplier performance. A more integrative approach to supply chain quality can be achieved through Total Quality Management (TQM) that factors in the nuances of supplier volatility, uncertainty, and impact into the business decision calculus for successful long-term sourcing relationships.

- Description:
- All industries can benefit from the improved productivity and success that result from attention to the costs of producing quality products, including the aerospace defense industry. Yet, this sector has struggled to accurately track costs of quality and use the information gleaned to better its operations. This research study demonstrates how this industry could deepen understanding of cost of quality through appreciating this concept from a theoretical perspective. Through a review of relevant literature and a survey and subsequent analysis of how several companies currently approach costs of quality, this research study explores the opportunities for improvement missed without regard for cost of quality as a concept and the advantages for companies who implement this concept into their business models. Surveying more companies and deeply penetrating their specific day-to-day business practices could expand this study for additional insight into the merits of approaching cost of quality as theory.

- Description:
- Traditionally, universities rely on Likert-scale or multiple-choice surveys to capture students’ Voice of the Customer (VOC) regarding educational program performance. Such surveys, convenient to collect and post-process, provide limited information for understanding students’ specific concerns, proposed solutions, and fresh ideas. In contrast, these discussion topics are more taxing for survey participants and analysts to complete but produce a wealth of information. Post-processing student and graduate-student responses into an ExcelTM framework allows both qualitative naturallanguage text mining (JMP® and R©), as well as some quantitative data mining (ExcelTM and Minitab®). Various types of analyses on detailed text strings, recoded and reduced from original feedback text, leverage this survey framework. This study presents (1) student needs and wants for various Program aspects and (2) student-proposed improvements and solutions for these areas of concern. For gleaning student insights, the educational TM and DM approach outperforms traditional survey methods in educational environments.

- Description:
- This thesis focuses on the voice of the customer by using focus groups of an organization’s internal customers, their employees. Using text analytics, the responses gathered during these focus groups have been analyzed. Internal customers are the eyes and ears of an organization because they are usually the primary contact a customer has with an organization. Therefore, employees provide direct knowledge about the process and function of an organization to help improve its overall service quality. Findings from this research show that customer satisfaction has a direct link to employee satisfaction. Improving the satisfaction of the internal customer also improves the overall satisfaction of an organization’s external customer. By allowing the internal customer’s voice to be heard, an organization can gain pertinent knowledge on why their employees are unsatisfied and ways to improve their satisfaction. Text analytics have proven to be beneficial in pinpointing data to assist with this effort.

- Description:
- This research focused on whether all prisons are crucibles for criminal activity; specifically, the maximum security state prison in Graterford, Pennsylvania. The popular myths of people in prison have marred much of the works performed by organizations led by incarcerated people within Graterford. Most of the research employed organizational documents such as By-Laws, Yearly Plans of Action, a Dossier, and historical accounts written by founding members of the organizations studied. Additionally, related government reports and newspaper articles were incorporated in the research process. Works written by Sociologists and Criminologists were sources of references utilized for the structure of the thesis, content, and provided a framework for the conclusions presented by the research. Finally, the popular myths of incarcerated people were challenged by the history of the organizations at Graterford, including the notion of all prisons being crucibles for criminal activity

- Nuclear Energy relies on the design and manufacturing of precision components and advanced materials to meet the extremely high standards of quality and safety. ASME Section III Subsection NCA, “Rules for Construction of Nuclear Facility Components” sets forth requirements for the design, procurement, fabrication, inspection, and testing of these components. The implementation of an ASME Section III Subsection NCA quality assurance program in the manufacture of such components is mandated by government agencies, regulatory bodies, and nuclear power licenses. Quality assurance programs are to be documented in a manual that fully describes the systems used to meet stated mandates established by law. The objective of this thesis is to determine the need for a quality manual guide that addresses the requirements of ASME Section III Subsection NCA and helps quality professionals comprehend its implementation. The goal is to provide an understanding of the mandated processes and how to implement them.
