- Description:
- The Master's recital of Mary Ann Zacarias was given at 3pm on June 1st, 2014 in the CSULA Music Hall. It consisted of sixty minutes of music that incorporated five style periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, and Post-Modern) and four languages (Italian, French, German, and English). This was given in fulfillment of Masters of Music of Vocal Performance at CSULA. This paper represents the collective program notes from the Master's Recital of soprano, Mary Ann Zacarias. The musical pieces in this program were composed Cimarosa, Gluck, Scarlatti, Pergolesi, Fauré, Duparc, Offenbach, Menotti, Libby Larsen, Schoenberg, and Poulenc. The musical selections for this project report were chosen to best prepare the student for her future endeavors in singing, as well as to represent varying musical periods and styles. This project report is a presentation of the historical research gathered by the author to prepare for her project.

- An increase in gold price and its demand in the last decade have again raised an interesting discussion about the role of gold in the financial market, especially with recent improvements in technologies to help investors with easy access to the gold market. Previous studies have shown that gold can be considered as a diversifying, hedging, or safe haven asset for various investments. By combining two statistical models from previous studies and different time series datasets, I examine the role of gold in the United States financial market over the last ten years, since many studies conducted their sample period prior to 2005. I find that gold has a negative relationship with both stocks and the dollar exchange rate on average during the last decade as well as during the Great Recession. While it is positively correlated with bonds during the last decade it is uncorrelated during the Great Recession. These findings are similar to previous results and suggest that gold continues to act as a hedging asset for stocks and the dollar exchange while as a diversification asset for bonds in the United States. Also, gold can be considered a safe haven for stocks, bonds, and the dollar exchange rate.

- Undocumented border crosser (UBC) deaths are a result of continuous and intricate processes of irregular migration, strict immigration policy making and enforcement, risk-taking, and dying. This thesis examines the recently reported causes of death (COD) of undocumented border crossers (UBCs) who were likely in transit to the United States from South America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America during 2014-2018. An initial systematic review of the literature is provided to contextualize these deaths and inform on trends of CODs from 1980s-2015. The main sources of data from which a sample is selected are: Arizona Open GIS Initiative for Deceased Migrants, Humane Borders, IOM Missing Migrants database, and records from the medical examiner’s office, USBP, and other government agencies. It was found that the most common causes of death shifted from primarily (1) unknown and (2) environmental exposure in 2014 to (1) unknown, (2) drowning and (3) vehicle accidents in 2018. A brief discussion will be included on my participation in exhumations of unidentified undocumented migrants in Texas, to further illustrate this humanitarian crisis. Through serious consideration of elements that have led to thousands of deaths over the years, this work can bring more understanding to this crisis that transcends a person’s immigration status, and can contextualize the loss of life for all affected or involved in the recovery and investigation processes.

- Data collected on the water quality of Topanga Creek from a previous study done in 2013 and 2014 are compared to data collected this year in 2016 to determine any significant changes. The water quality of Topanga Creek is currently being influenced by the drought in Southern California along with several other possible influences. Therefore, by comparing the data from the previous and current study, the influence of the drought can be determined, while other potential sources of influence can be identified. Looking into known sources of factors that impact Topanga Creek’s water quality, and other possible sources such as crayfish I can potentially determine which influence is of the most concern and how much they are impacting Topanga Creek. Using current and previous data to see if the drought is impacting the health of Topanga Creek and by how much has not previously been done, since southern California has not experienced a severe drought like this for some time. Water samples were taken at the same site as in the previous study, and the following parameters such as conductivity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, flow and water temperature were also recorded at these sites. Once this data was collected and recorded, a comparison was made to see if there were any trends and/or significant changes to indicate any influences. This study provides the data to see how a drought can impact a creek such as Topanga Creek and to identify other possible sources of influence during droughts.

- Description:
- The purpose of this qualitative research proposal is to explore the experiences of eight graduate students participating in an international social work field practicum. Specifically, this study evaluates students' access to program support from the program staff (trip leaders and host agencies). Further, this study examines the program staff members' board members' and host agencies' perspectives on the effectiveness of the supervision they offer to students and the additional resources they may themselves need in order to provide adequate support to students. This project addresses several gaps in what is known about international social work education by examining an underserved and understudied population in the context of a rare program design: Spanish speaking U.S. Latina/o social work students completing six-week practicums in a Spanish speaking country while living with host families. The study may yield interesting implications related to designing and promoting a model for successful international social work education.

6. The Impact of Childhood Trauma: Cognitive Development, Mental Health, and Trauma Informed Treatment

- Description:
- According to the National Children’s Alliance (2015), in 2014 approximately 116,940 children that experienced maltreatment were between the ages of 0 to 6. The risk of victimization is especially high during the first years of life that it is estimated that for every 1,000 children in the same age range, approximately 23 are victims of abuse (National Children’s Alliance, 2015). It is nationally estimated that in the fiscal year 2014 approximately 1,580 children died as a result of abuse and neglect (United States Department Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 2014). Of these fatalities over 70% is composed of children younger than 3 years old. Annually over 75% of the reported child abuse cases consist of victims that were neglected, 17% were physically abused, 8.3% were sexually abused and 6.8% experienced “other types of maltreatment” (USDHHS, 2014). Child abuse does not only have a detrimental impact on the cognitive development of children, but also on their mental health. Research examined in this project demonstrates that neurodevelopmental changes in the brain, cognitive functioning, internal working model and mental health are the most adverse outcomes of childhood abuse. Trauma informed interventions examined in this study include Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(TF-CBT); Eye, Movement, Desensitization, and Re-processing (EMDR); and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).

- In the fall quarter of 2013, I was introduced to the practice of acupressure. The motivation to help patients and practitioners has led to the design requirements and constraints. Designs, analyses and prototypes have been made, followed by trials that evaluated the performance of several components. Lessons learned include the value of off-the-shelf parts, rapid prototyping and second opinions. The project was postponed due to graduation of some members. In fall 2014, second generation of students form a new team with some previous members and have been working on the project with new innovative ideas, designs and concepts. In the quarter of fall 2014 and winter 2015, the client, Dr Jocelyn Chi, will be introduced with a fresh design of Acutron device, which has a row of two massage fingertips, stronger rolling ball bearings carriage, two spring switches controller for X-Y direction and stronger cylinder Z direction movement with air supply from the parent cylinder.
