- In the language convention equation for a long time the government plays a major role in Chinese. Since 1949, when the Peoples Republic of China was founded, Chinese used on mainland China has been much influenced, if not prescribed, by official government decrees, government official media and government supported literary publications. This has held true until very recently when Internet use became prevalent. This study of newly coined Chinese proverbs demonstrates that nowadays the tide of authority is being reversed and even the language used by the government’s official media is being influenced by the populace or in other words by the people the media tries to influence.

- Kafka’s art is one of negative capability immersed in negative emotions. Towards what is this art of negativity directed? In the broad sense, the Kafkaesque strangeness can be seen as part of his modern allegory meant to expose the modern conditions of unfreedom. With combined insights from Lacan (those related to the Name of the Father and the analysis of psychosis) and from Derrida (regarding the logocentric structure), the authors examine one specific story, “The Judgment,” to understand how Kafka exposes conditions of unfreedom and why such an exposition in fact reflects Kafka’s passionate desire for the freedom which has been restricted or denied under certain modern condition. The more shocking and also more sobering part of Kafka’s prophecy in “The Judgment” is this revelation: the victim of repressive power, often in the image of a “son,” is victimized partly because he has already internalized the rules of a logocentriclogo centric system with the “Name of Father” (a phrase from Lacan) at the center, whether this “father” is alive, as in “The Judgment,” or dead, as “In the Penal Colony.”

- In this article, I develop a Gandhian perspective on animal liberation. Indeed, I argue, against Gandhi himself, the traditional Hindu theory of the purusharthas, or goals of life, applies to non-human as well as human animals. In this respect, I adapt Parel’s reading of Gandhi as reinterpreting the purusharthas through the philosophy of non-violence. In this reinterpretation, Gandhi, regards political freedom (swaraj) as the means to spiritual freedom (moksha). Gandhi is already an animal liberationist in the sense of advocating liberation for animals from violence and exploitation by humans. However, he does not also embrace the political turn in animal ethics, asserting that domesticated animals are co-citizens of the mixed polity. I further reinterpret the purusharthas through Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence to embrace this political turn. This combines three forms of liberation: negative freedom from exploitation, positive freedom to be a political participant, and freedom as spiritual growth and self-development. Not only does my argument provide a novel Gandhian perspective on animal liberation. It also challenges the political turn in animal ethics to embrace Gandhi’s notion of spiritual liberation as a goal of life for the mixed, interspecies polity.

- In 1986, the Audit Education Committee of the Audit Section of the world’s foremost accounting scholarly association – the American Accounting Association– concluded that knowledge of business systems was important to the study of auditing but best acquired prior to taking auditing. Although the close relationship between the accounting information systems (AIS) and auditing courses has been recognized, the linkage has not been empirically confirmed. This study examines the relationship between the AIS course and the auditing course. The value of AIS performance in modeling subsequent performance in auditing was tested and confirmed in two different universities having similar curricula but distinctly different student populations. The AIS grade was found to be a highly significant predictor of subsequent performance in the auditing course for students at both universities, even after considering more general determinants of academic performance such as cumulative GPA and selected demographic variables.

- the purpose of this essay is to develop a concept of a cosmopolitan order that facilitates both moral solidarity and ethical pluralism in the globe. Doing so, I will explore both Jürgen Habermas’ and Seyla Benhabib’s reconstruction of the Kantian cosmopolitan project. I then discuss a concept of a cosmopolitan order that can guarantee global justice in terms of basic human rights and, simultaneously, promote human happiness and renovating nations and peoples.

- To conceptualize Confucian religiosity is to reveal the ultimate concern contained in the Confucian concept of life. Conceptually, ultimate concern connotes an understanding of the foundation of life, the ultimate goal of life, and the way to it. Based on this perspective, this paper attempts to analyze existentially the concept of cheng (诚), the central concept of the Zhongyong. I will endeavor to demonstrate that cheng expresses a religious feeling that sustains Confucianism. Conceptually, cheng is a disposition of feeling in which one is able to see the Tian-endowed nature, free from internal and external influences. Since the Tian-endowed nature is the foundation of human existence, it is the primary sustaining force for human beings. To be in touch with this force and follow its drive are then the ultimate concern for Confucians. In the Zhongyong, we can read a systematical effort to reveal the fundamental disposition of human existence in terms of cheng, from which a Confucian’s religiosity is nurtured.

- This article serves as a preliminary investigation of decorum as a rhetorical resource, and the ethical ramifications of decorum for contemporary society. Recently, academic writing has become the subject of renewed scrutiny regarding the ethical treatment of language and ideas, partly as a result of the controversial publication of Alan Sokal’s “hoax” article “Transgressing the Boundaries: Towarda Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity.” In this paper, two questionsare addressed specifically: can a particular vocabulary or “jargon” induce adherence to an argument separate from, or even at the expense of, the argument itself? Ifso, what responsibilities does the use of such a vocabulary entail? It is argued that the events surrounding Sokal’s hoax, while demonstrating the ethical pitfalls inherent in the use of decorum, simultaneously privileges it as a powerful epistemic resource in the framing of a “world of possibility.”

- Every year many college students choose accounting as their major in pursuit of a career in public accounting. Disenchanted with their jobs, every year, too, many accountants leave their public accounting jobs and seek alternative employment. Prior research demonstrates an information gap between the employers and the college graduates as a major cause of turnover. A survey was conducted to collect employee selection and retention information from both national and non-national accounting firms. The primary objective of this study was to investigate what job attributes are perceived important in the firms' selection and retention process. Significant differences were found between the national and non-national firms, suggesting the possibility of a correlation between particular personality traits and a successful employment in public accounting firms by their size. Subsequent analyses resulted in identifying attributes that are perceived significant to national and non-national public accounting firms. The findings of this research suggest that increased awareness about size differences coupled with realistic employment expectations are two necessary ingredients for a successful career in public accounting.
