- Following the completion of my undergraduate work I spent I five years handcrafting jewelry, using the lost wax casting technique. My interest in sculpture resulted from the' dissatisfaction of working on a small scale. Because of the desire to work directly with metal, I chose to shape and weld steel rather than to cast forms that were originally created in some other material. Most of my early sculptures were abstractions of the female figure. Surfaces either were left unfinished or partially sanded, leaving the welded texture as an integral part of the finished piece. After using this approach for some time, I came to feel that figurative references were I restrictive, which I eventually eliminated, until shapes became quite geometric and the surfaces refined. Wilhelm Worringer suggests man's tendency to abstraction in art,"is the result of a great inner conflict between man and his surroundings." (See more in text)

- I. Introduction These paintings evolved from a concern with shape surface, and color. The sensually decorative results were aided by the addition of a spatial illusion provided by layers of two dimensional planes. The surfaces and colors were a result of the eye looking through these layers and blending them into a single surface. The use of the nude figure, pastel hues, and rich surfaces increased the sensual results. (See more in text.)

- Description:
- In the process of working on my Master's Degree, I learned a lot about myself. I learned I need people and I learned how to work. When I left my familiar environment of home, school, friends, and moved to Santa Cruz and set up my garage-studio, I found I had trouble confronting my work. Being alone with the machinery scared me. If something went wrong that I did not understand, I was unable to work or even to remain in the studio. I missed people to talk with, to ask questions and advice of. But because I had to, I had my exhibit ahead of me, and because I wanted to, I had to conquer my problems and learn how to work by myself in the studio. I had to learn how to find resources outside the safe environment of school.
