- Description:
- This study will attempt to deal with the body of J.D. Salinger's work from his earliest short stories through his novel, The Catcher in the Rye (1951). It will focus upon his major theme, the initiation of a young man or woman into the modern world and will make an effort to trace this theme throughout the portion of his work under consideration. To accomplish this it will also be necessary to discuss the theme of alienation which Salinger finds as the direct result of the initiation.

- It is the purpose of this study to determine the opinions of the parents of pupils attending the Arden-Carmichael School District schools as to the relative merits of conferences and report cards for reporting pupil progress. Several phases of the problem will be analyzed through the following questions: 1. To discuss the opinions of parents with respect to continuing the parent-teacher conference program in conjunction with a check-list type of report card, and 2. To discover the opinion of the parents who prefer a report card only. The opinions of those parents who prefer continuing the parent-teacher conference program in conjunction with a check-list type of report card and of those who prefer the report card only will be tabulated. The replies to the subsidiary questions will also be tabulated in order t.211.t recommendations may be made for improvement in the program of reporting to parents. Questions subsidiary to the main problems were used to provide information useful to the district. Such questions were devised to discover how often conferences or reports were desired and at what levels the conferences were preferred

- Description:
- For many years differences of opinion have existed as to the ideal class size for maximum pupil achievement in elementary grades. Even at the primary level there is a wide range of opinion as evidenced by the results of a poll of five hundred school administrators. Their recommendations ranged from as low as ten pupils to over forty pupils for primary classes.1 Published experimental evidence in support of any class size, however, is very limited. The purpose of this studywas to ascertain if any differences in achievement resulted from reducing first grade reading class size by means ofthe early-late system of scheduling at Hollywood Park School, Sacramento City Unified School District, Sacramento,California. Although class size is an important item in budgeting, designing classrooms, curriculum, methods of instruction, teacher training, and many other aspects of education, facts on which to base decisions are few. In this study, an attempt was made to contribute some factual information on this subject.

- It was the purpose of this study to formulate a desirable curriculum pattern for a minimal sequence of college courses in Speech Correction; said pattern to be based on an investigation of the Speech Correction curriculums offered by thirty U.S. colleges and to include (1) catalogue statements, (2) texts, am {3} expanded course statements. Also, it was hoped that other pertinent information useful to a Speech Correction department on a college level might be acquired, i.e., (4) which colleges maintained a clinic, which of these charged their patients a fee, and to what extent, and (5) which colleges had fellowships available to Speech Correction majors who might wish to continue in graduate work.

- Description:
- It was the purpose of this study to determine if a difference exists between the attitudes of classroom teachers and public school speech correctionists toward stuttering. In addition to this question, the following questions were proposed: (1) Do the attitudes of speech correctionists who have had a course more than one-half of which was devoted specifically to stuttering differ from the attitudes of speech correctionists who have not had such a course? (2) Do the attitudes of classroom teachers who have had a college survey course in speech correction differ from the attitudes of classroom teachers who have not had such a course? (3) Do differences in attitude toward stuttering exist among classroom teachers with one, two, three to five, six to ten, 11 to 20, and over 20 years of teaching experience? (4) Do differences in attitude toward stuttering exist among speech correctionists with one, two, three to four, and five or more years of speech correction experience? (5) Do the attitudes toward stuttering of speech correctionists with previous classroom teaching experience differ from the attitudes of speech correctionists without such experience? (6) Do differences in attitude toward stuttering exist among classroom teachers aged 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, and 50 or over? (7) Do differences in attitude toward stuttering exist among speech correctionists aged 20 to 29, 30 to 39, and 40 or over? (8) Do differences in attitude toward stuttering exist among classroom teachers of various grade levels? (9) Do the attitudes of male classroom teachers differ from the attitudes of female classroom teachers?

- Description:
- The purpose of this study was to evaluate the grouping procedures used in the placement of Grant Union High School freshmen into classes of various mathematical levels according to the results of standardized tests. Specifically, the following factors were studied: (1) High-eighth and high-ninth grade arithmetic achievement test medians for this area. (2) Possible relationship of gains made between arithmetic achievement tests taken in the high-eighth and the high ninth grades to reading and intelligence scores recorded in the high-eighth grade. (3) Lower and upper limit scores of the arithmetic achievement test pertaining to each mathematical level. (4) The number and type of mathematics classes needed for the most efficient placement of incoming freshmen.

- Description:
- It is the purpose of this study to investigate the philosophical and psychological foundations of the problem of using algebra as a means of teaching high school students to do critical and reflective thinking when dealing with problems of everyday living as well as when resolving problems involving quantity or space. The method of attack will be a review of the literature available. This review must yield the philosophical and psychological possibility, the cultural value, and the implications for education of such teaching. Further, it is not simply the intent to criticize; therefore, the study must also lay at least a minimum foundation for any proposed revisions in the course of algebra.

- The purpose of this study is to determine the adequacy of natural and artificial lighting of classrooms of Placer High School and College and to make general recommendations for the improvement of lighting in these classrooms. This involves several minor problems: (1) to determine just what standards should be achieved; (2) to determine what the natural and artificial lighting situation is; (3) to compare the lighting conditions at Placer High School and College with acceptable standards; and (4) to make general recommendations for achieving these standards.
