- This thesis is an investigation into the treatment of the myth of the American dream in two
very different works from near opposite ends of the twentieth century that illuminates the
central importance of the myth in America. The author uses a Marxist framework of analysis to examine F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" and Carolyn Chute's "The Beans of Egypt, Maine," two different books that detail the myth of the American dream's profound influence on the psyche of their characters.
