Health Information Literacy Behaviors Among Nursing Students: How the 2016 ACRL Framework for information literacy informs instruction amid the Covid 19 pandemic

This paper will research the health information seeking habits and abilities of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students at a university in central California. This study surveyed students in hybrid and fully online classes as well as traditional face-to-face classes. Survey results will be used to provide guidance to librarians in how to embed health information literacy into curriculum and programs in order to be more in line with the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) 2016 Framework for Information Literacy (hereafter referred to as “Framework”) and in addressing the huge shift to online instruction mandated by the Covid 19 pandemic. This study will explore the Framework in health science libraries with a specific emphasis on the library under review but with implications that can be broadly generalized so as to be helpful to health science libraries generally as they consider how to implement the Framework into online health literacy instruction for nursing students. The survey conducted found that the majority of students conduct research in an online setting from home. With that in mind and in order to address the needs of online teaching and learning in light of the recent Covid 19 pandemic and because the majority of the Registered Nurse (RN)-BSN and graduate nursing program is delivered in an online environment at the institution under review, this paper will look at ways to implement the Framework in an online setting.
