ePub learning object: health information on the Internet
Although the Internet represents a vast repository of potentially interesting and useful information, a number of barriers exist with respect to the access and use of that information. One barrier concerns the difficulties encountered with respect to locating the one key piece of information that is needed from the huge sea of data that exists. The sheer amount of information available on the Internet can make answering even a simple question the technological equivalent of trying to find a needle in a haystack. Another barrier to be considered relates to the need to determine whether the information that is found holds scientific validity or not. Despite the huge amount of information related to health and medicine that exists on the Internet, current research has found significant amounts of that information to be lacking in scientific validity. By applying a methodical approach to assessing the various componenets of a website, a determination can be made as to whether the information on the website is likely to be scientific valid.
