WHILE INCARCERATED BY the British in the 1920s, Mohandas Gandhi wrote his Autobiography. Having lived, though at a distance, the horrors of World War I, Gandhi seemed to foresee the even worse terrors of World War II and weave those twin self-inflicted catastrophes into a metaphysic.
