Student-Centered Practices in a General-Education Oceanography Course
The Oceanography course taught at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) has successfully integrated student-centered learning practices as well as practical operational applications to educate students in science. Hands-on, inquiry-based activities are the primary way we evaluate students in this course. This student-centered focus has led us to introduce the latest technology in the classroom in the form of multi-media and software applications. An end-of-course review process helps us to maintain the currency and relevancy of the course for the Coast Guard mission and the Academy’s curriculum. In the future, we seek to introduce cutting-edge technology and the latest software advances for science education.
