Leftist radicalism among Brazilian university students prior to 1964.
The purpose of this paper is to study the factors that determined the emergence of leftist radicalism among Brazilian students in the 1960®s. The present research starts from the assumption that during this period, when Brazil was undergoing political crisis, the university students were disenchanted with the slow progress of democratic means to improve the social, political and economic conditions of the country. Brazilian university students were frustrated by the existing situation and blamed the system for the present conditions.1 Using available data on Brazilian students from 1962-1963, it is the concern of this study to examine in particular two factors (student frustration and student system blame), and also to learn to what extent they determined the leftist radical orientation, among Brazilian university students prior to 1964.
