Fostering Parent Involvement in Elementary Classrooms

Current research has repeatedly shown parental involvement in elementary school to have a beneficial effect on children's learning, social skills, and emotional growth. While many education professionals seek to bridge the gap between home and school, partnerships may be threatened by a disconnect between the family culture of students and that of the teacher or school. An analysis of current literature in the education field was conducted to locate research-based best practices that educators could employ to involve all families. Due to a lack of compiled best practices a comprehensive resource guide was created for elementary school teachers of all grade levels. The evolving cultural climate of our Nation's schools necessitates educators to continually seek out parent collaboration and involvement to best educate our youth so they may succeed in today's multicultural society.
