X-Ray Crystallography of Alkali-Cl

We have measured the lattice constants and the structure factors of three salt-like crystal structures (NaCl, K-Cl, Rb-Cl) using a X-rays produced with a Cu X-ray tube operated at 30 kV and Geiger-Mueller counter that is incorporated in the physics department's new x-ray diffraction machine. The machine (Tel-X-Ometer) was recenty purchased by the Department of Physics and Astronomy for use in the upper-division laboratory course for Solid State Physics (Phy431L). The lattice constants were determined within an experimental uncertainty <5% using Bragg diffraction peaks from single-crystal samples.
