My thesis project was to create a one-act play based on the true story of former Los Angeles Mother Superior, Anita Caspary. Written as a play-within-a-play, Humiliata dramatizes Caspary's life, specifically the events that preceded her leadership in the exodus of over three hundred nuns from the Catholic Church in 1968. In this report I describe the selection of the topic, my research on Caspary and the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in the 1960s, my playwriting process and its culmination in a staged reading at California State University Los Angeles in October 2014. I also include an analysis and evaluation of the final draft of the play. Although Humiliata examines one particular nun sparking one particular small revolution at one particular time and place, the marginalization of women through religious hierarchy is a problem that exists on a global scale today.
