Project

Developing a Website with Supplemental Materials to Support Leader in Me and Special Education Students

The Leader in Me© program has been used in schools to encourage and teach students to take personal responsibility for their actions and learning, communicate effectively with teachers and peers, as well as learn to work well with others. The researcher is employed as a new teacher in a district that has adopted The Leader in Me process, which is based on Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. As a teacher who has been introduced to The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and trained in Leader in ME, this researcher recognized the need for this program to be tailored to meet the needs of students in special education. Teaching students self-determination and self-advocacy is a critical component of education. The purpose of this project was to develop a website that could be used as a resource by Special Education Teachers implementing The Leader in Me program or for teachers seeking resources to teach students how to adopt and implement self-determination, leadership and self-advocacy skills. The name of the website is imaself-determinedleader.webly.com. The website is intended to offer teachers information and strategies about the value and positive outcomes of teaching students leadership, self-determination, and self-advocacy skills, as well as to provide them with resource websites, videos, documents, curriculum and tools to support these skills. Keywords: leadership, self-advocacy, self-determination, special education
