Today, for North America as a whole, modern Indian life differs greatly from the American Indian culture as it existed at the time of the first European contact and shortly after. Some tribes have disappeared while others have lost almost all of their old culture. Yet many tribes, the Eskimo and others in Canada as well as some in Mexico, still retain a modified form of cultural patterns. The farmers who were placed on reservations have changed less than their nomadic brothers.
