Beyond the bell: flipping the script

This thesis is comprised of a fifty-minute video-documentary in which I examine the Youth Development Program (YDP), an after-school program, and the services it provides students, services of which none are more important than activities that help close the achievement gap in core subjects of standardized testing. In it I emphasize activities not typically offered during the daily school curriculum including science, technology, engineering and math education (STEM). Other areas of focus include the use of multimedia and fitness education. In the late fall of 2007, I began teaching video production for YDP. My desperate voyage into education would result in me having a transformative experience: it would lead me to rewrite the script for my life. The title of my film is "Flipping the Script" because it is follows my journey from student, to filmmaker and then to educator.
