Bound by Love: Grandparents' Experiences Raising Their Grandchildren

Grandparents constitute a vital role for families and society, and when grandparents are the primary caregivers, they potentially provide boundless benefits to their grandchildren. The purpose of this study was to explore grandparents' experiences and stories raising their grandchildren. This explorative qualitative study was a combination of convenience and snowball with the sampling totaling 11 subjects. The respondents' age ranged from 52 to 73 years old. All grandparents interviewed had at least one custodial grandchild living in their household. The results from the interviews collectively show four main themes:1) History of trauma and loss 2) Challenges and Obstacles 3) Role of relationships and agencies as protective factors 4) grandparent-grandchild relationship and satisfaction. The findings of this study not only confirm the struggles and distresses many grandfamilies experience, but it corroborates grandparents' selfless love and commitment of as well as the significance of professional and community support.
