Sexual politics in Moll Flanders.

In his Introduction to the English Novel, Arnold Kettle points to a dilemma that is shared by almost all of the heroines of English fiction from Moll Flanders onwards: "What is a young woman of spirit and intelligence to do in the polite but barbarous world of bourgeois society? Only two courses are open to her, the passive one of acquiescence to subjugation or the active one of independent rebellion."
