Collaboration through Professional Learning Communities
The divide between special educators and general educators has proven to be a significant issue in the classroom, particularly when students with special needs are integrated into the general education classroom. As a result of this divide, there is a clear need for collaboration between general education teachers and special education teachers. The researcher created and presented a manual to the staff of an elementary school in southern California that outlined how to develop a collaborative professional learning community. The goal of the manual was to provide a complete set of instructions for creating a collaborative professional community that could be used and implemented by readers in their own school setting, thereby facilitating collaboration between special educators, general educators, and other support staff through active research and professional development.
