An oral public speaking course for the adult hearing impaired professional : review of existing programs and proposed guidelines

The purpose of this graduate project was to: (1) ascertain the present status of: a) oral public speaking courses for the hearing impaired adult. b) speech assessment tools used with hearing impaired adults. c) techniques utilized to improve/develop phonetic and phonological speech skills of hearing impaired adults. (2) provide information for use by colleges and/or adult education programs in developing an oral public speaking course for hearing impaired adults. (3) propose guidelines for an oral public speaking course for hearing impaired adults. Information for this project was obtained through: (1) questionnaires to speech specialists working with hearing impaired adults. (2) research of the literature on oral public speaking courses for hearing impaired adults and on speech tests, methods/techniques for hearing impaired adults. (3) interviews with adult hearing impaired professionals. (4) personal contacts with deaf individuals, speech pathologists and other professionals in the field.
