Latino Parent Training: Increasing Parent Participation in IEPs

The purpose of this project was to develop parent workshops for Spanish speaking parents of students in Special Education. A review of the research indicates that Spanish speaking parents do not actively participate in the Individual Education Plans (IEP) of their children. This project focused on the development of parent workshops developed in Spanish for presentation to parents and English for the purposes of this project. The workshops were designed to inform parents about the IEP process, their right to question the process and solicit help from a Spanish speaking Special Education Teacher. The workshops developed for this project will be helpful in informing and empowering Spanish speaking parents to participate in their students’ IEP process because they will have been given the questions to ask, the language to use and the understanding that it is their right to pursue the very best education for their children.
