Agriculture and cooperatives: a descriptive analysis of the development of Congolese agriculture and cooperatives

To strengthen the economy of the Congo, investment in the agricultural sector was encouraged. Cooperatives were developed to market the agricultural output. Although crop conditions have been favorable for the development and profitability of Congolese agriculture, production for exports has drastically declined and has been affected by the rebellion; and cooperative activities were inefficient following independence. The problem of this study is to investigate and determine the causes for failure of agricultural production and cooperative activities. This study emphasizes the steps needed to develop a program which will reorganize the agricultural and cooperative movement so as to shift it towards money-income producing activities in the agri-related business sectors.
