The effectiveness of two behavior modification weight control programs.
Obesity is considered by the medical profession to be one of the most prevalent health hazards in the American culture. Estimates of its incidence in the United States range from 20% to 40%. Overweight individuals, as compared to individuals of normal weight, are markedly more vulner- able to respiratory difficulties, cardiovascular and renal diseases, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, appendicitis, hernias and gall bladder diseases (Mayer, 1968). Not only is obesity a major health problem, but it also restricts social and physical activity, lessens the chances for social and vocational success and produces feelings of low self- esteem.
