Community Involvement in an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme School: Characteristics that Initiate Partnerships

This descriptive study examined characteristics that attract community partnerships within an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme candidate school. The school began the process of becoming an International Baccalaureate (IB) school three years ago. Within this timeframe, the school was successful in developing strong community partnerships with organizations, businesses, and parents. Community partners reported four factors for initiating and sustaining involvement. These factors were: (a) the leadership of the school, (b) the IB Programme, (c) personal connections, and (d) the diversity of the population. Characteristics of the IB Programme included the focus on international mindedness and the inquiry-based approach to learning and teaching.
