Tetrahydrofolic acid is composed of reduced pteroic acid and L-glutamic acid linked "by an amide" bond. Tetrahydrof olate coenzymes are involved in the transfer of one carbon fragments, an important class of metabolic reactions essential to the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids. Significant among these transfer reactions is the synthesis of the amino acid methionine in which 5-CH^-H^folate donates its methyl group to homocysteine in the presence of coenzyme and methionine synthetase. Methionine, in turn, is incorporated into proteins.
