Action research: a study of a 5th grade professional learning community's impact on the achievement of English language learners

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of a professional learning community's implementation of SMART goals on the achievement of English language learners. This study used an action research design which included both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data was taken from student achievement data from English language learner student assessment scores. Qualitative data was taken from a review and analysis of artifacts that included professional learning community agendas and a focus group interview about the SMART goal implementation. The findings of this study show how SMART goals are a critical element within of a professional learning community, and how professional learning communities can have a positive impact on increasing the achievement of English language learners. This study also showed that instruction changed as a result of teacher implementation of SMART goals and that teacher collaboration has a positive impact on the achievement on English language learners. Teacher knowledge about best practices for English language learners also increased as a result of the professional learning community's implementation of SMART goals.
