Californio Resistance to the U.S. Invasion of 1846

This thesis analyzes the conquest of the California territory by the United States through a study of the response of the Californios, the Hispanic inhabitants of the region. The goal of the thesis is to establish that in spite of the Californios' military disadvantage, their long history of internal political rivalries, and their many rebellions against the Governors of Mexico City who were sent to this province, Californios were united in their determination to fight the United States' invasion of the region. Examination of various battles between the Californios and the U.S. forces demonstrates the Californios' fierce resolve to defend and to resist annexation by the United States.
