Staffing with In-house Registry: Does it Delay Clock-outs and Lead to Overtime?
Sleep deprivation, working overtime, and long 12-hour shifts have been cited as causes for Registered Nurses (RN) to have potentially unsafe practices resulting in harmful patient care. Currently, there is a lack of research that looks at the unit of hire as a potential external factor. This grant proposal will identify if incremental overtime has a relationship between the traditional hiring unit of an intensive care RN and the non-traditional float based hiring units in relation to incremental overtime at an integrated healthcare system in Southern California. This study is significant to nursing since fatigue and stress are known reasons that trigger reduced wellness. The evidence could support nurse practitioner caring for nurses in their self-care.
