Middle school students' perceptions of racism and its impact on school culture

Racism in schools is a systemic problem that affects not only schools themselves but the quality of education a student receives. The purpose of this study was to compare how adults and students perceive racism on a middle school campus. Qualitative methods were used to collect data, specifically focus groups. The participants included students who were enrolled at the school and adults that were employed at the campus. The findings are presented by analyzing the response participants provided and placing the responses into themes. Data analysis showed a disparity in how students and adults perceived racism on campus. Follow up research should be conducted to discover if the other schools produce similar data.
