Thesis

Mental retardation: a survey of attitudes and knowledge in Fresno County, California

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes and knowledge about mental retardation and the mentally retarded which were representative of the operators and the neighbors of family care homes in Fresno County, California. The study was designed to determine if greater knowledge about the mentally retarded resulted in more favorable attitudes towards the mentally retarded. There was no attempt to evaluate related knowledge or values which might influence situation. The study was designed to provide a descriptive view of a situation; that is, how the mentally retarded were viewed in the eyes of selected community members of Fresno. The information is intended (1) to have value as an administrative tool; and (2) to add to the limited literature on attitudes towards mental health facilities, such as the family care horses for the mentally retarded.
