China’s ambitions in the South China Sea and Indian Ocean Rim are of significance to China’s expansion. In recent years, the South China Sea has been a major area of dispute between various Asian claimants over small islands, atolls, and reefs in the region. Many of these nations are looking to gain access to the resources in the Exclusive Economic Zones that encompass these islands. China’s expansion in the Indian Ocean differs in that the country aims to establish strong trade partners in the region.
