Gender and computer mediated communications: a content analysis of the language expressed in twitch broadcasts

For decades, video game culture has produced patriarchal standards and ideals that produce inequality for the women in this community. The question this research seeks to answer is whether Twitch, a new video platform popular within the video game community, reflects gender- biased practices. A review of the literature shows patterns of gender bias in the community and in video games. The hypersexuality and objectification of female characters in video games influences the behavior of players. Female players engaged in online gaming communications often encounter harassment and hostility from their male counterparts. Utilizing Twitch and its many broadcasters, this study analyzes the comment threads within a broadcasted feed. The findings of this study indicate that female players experience sexism and harassment from anonymous users in the community. Other patterns of masculinity and aggression are detailed.
