The effects of global pen pals on second graders' writing performance and cultural sensitivity

Learning how to write a friendly letter, complete with date, salutation, body, closing, and signature, is one of the second grade content standards for California. Demonstrating map skills by describing the absoulte and relative location of people, places, and environments is also a second grade standard for California Combining these two standards with a chance to form a friendship with a pen pal around the globe allows young students to become more culturally aware and sensitive to different types of people around them. A classroom of students in Southern California learned to become more aware and knowledgeable of cultures around them by having the opportunity to exchange pen pal letters with students in Seoul, South Korea. This study shows the growth of cultural awareness and sensitivity when second grade students write pen pal letters to students in Seoul, South Korea.
