Grappling with literary text: a handbook for third grade teachers

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts place an increased emphasis on complex text in the primary grades. The Common Core Shifts explain how the CCSS are different from the previous standards. The Shifts, specifically Shift 1 and Shift 2, may focus educators on curriculum and methodologies that will align lessons to the Common Core State Standards. This master’s project aims to assist teachers in teaching complex literary text to young readers, create basic close reading skills to develop a range of close reading proficiencies, as well as give teachers insight on the selection of complex text and its academic vocabulary. The purpose of this project was two-fold: to develop a handbook for teachers who are adjusting teaching practices to meet the rigor of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts in third grade; and to assist teachers with selecting and using complex literary text for ELA content delivery.
