Wellness faire for the elderly Assyrian community: promoting awareness of mental illness and gaining insight on increasing overall well-being

The purpose of this project was to explore the pressing need of the elderly Assyrian community. The wellness faire was developed and implemented to decrease the stigma of mental illness, while promoting wellness of the overall individual. The first phase of the project involved identifying the need for a wellness faire and also having the Wellness Collaborative assist in the process of development. By identifying the need and resources in the community, the faire provided an opportunity of reducing the stigma of mental illness and promoting wellness. The wellness faire featured several speakers who highlighted different facets and struggles of mental illness, at the same time emphasizing on recovery. Overall, it was of great importance of this Wellness Collaborative to shed light on mental illness and begin to break the barrier between the struggle and the resources that are available in the community to help.
