Low-income black mothers and their expectations of their sons.

The purpose of this study was to examine, describe and explore the relationships that exist and influence maternal roles and role expectations of low income black boys. The study examined and described the limited opportunities and historical peculiarities of the black family living in poverty; the nature of the black family's adaptation to the mainstream culture; whether or not the school was responsive to these differences in cultural and family heritage; related research materials available on the relationships between children's reading difficulties and maternal roles; black life at Bigby Villa Housing Project, Fresno, California; and maternal roles and role expectations and performance of children living in poverty within the black family.
