Replacing Traditional Morning Work with Build Bins in the Early Grades

As the academic demands placed on young learners become greater and greater, it becomes crucial for children to master foundational literacy skills early on. Through play and the support of teachers, students can master these skills through activities that are open-ended, give students autonomy, and support oral language development in the classroom. This project created Build Bins and Mini-lessons that provide teachers and students with activities and resources that support oral language development while allowing students the opportunity to be creative and experience joy through play. The activities utilize different materials that are provided in the classroom. The build bins are designed to capture the interest of students at the 1st grade level and creates challenges and risk taking opportunities for students. The mini-lessons were created for the teacher and provide open-ended questions they can ask students, standards that apply to using the build bins, and a self-reflection activity for students. The build bins and mini-lessons align with Common Core State Standards and NGSS standards for first grade.
