Preschool to kindergarten: parents' concerns about and identification of transition activities
The purposes of this research are to: (a) identify the concerns of parents of children with special needs regarding the transition of their child from preschool to kindergarten, and (b) propose transition activities that may assist in supporting the child and family through the transition process. It is important that the transition process to kindergarten be well defined, and that it meets the individual needs of children with special needs and their families. Transition activities are often left up to the parents or not offered at all. Planning and implementation of transition activities is necess~y to reduce parents' anxiety before, during, and after transition. This research identifies for parents and school personnel the best practices for children's transition from preschool to kindergarten. It also offers implementation strategies consistent with the transition activities preferred by study participants.
