Exploring the reciprocity between reading and writing

Reading is an essential skill that is needed to be successful. To help students achieve essential reading skills it is crucial to teach those skills in a way that deepens their understanding. Reading and writing are reciprocal processes that go hand in hand. If educators teach these skills together, students will gain a deeper understanding of reading and be able to apply what they know about reading to their writing. This study examined the reciprocity between reading and writing. In this study, eight students were selected to participate in an after-school writing intervention. Writing and reading data were collected to measure students’ growth before and after the after-school intervention. The analysis of the data revealed students in the afterschool intervention made one-year of growth in their reading ability. Although the sample size did not produce statistically significant results, were various implications from the data.
