Making It in Academia: As Told by Student-parents
Currently, limited scholarship regarding the lived experiences of student-parents exists (Duquaine-Watson, 2007). For the purpose of this research, I define student-parents as college students who have children. Student-parents constitute a growing population that college campuses need to be aware of. This study examines how student-parents at Smithville University balance the role of being a parent and a student. through qualitative analysis, in-depth interviews provide a glimpse into the lives of these student-parents. This thesis describes their success, their struggles, their motivations, and their aspirations. Each story provides a unique perspective on how they navigate within higher education often challenging the role that they are intended to fulfill.
