A Practical Guide For The Selection, Preparation And Performance Of Repertoire For Children’s Choir And Instrumental Ensemble

The benefits of pairing a children’s choir with an instrumental ensemble are numerous, but when it comes to performing works within this idiom, conductors are often limited by three things: their resources, their knowledge of available and appropriate repertoire, and their lack of experience preparing music with instrumental accompaniments. This thesis addresses each issue with a detailed discussion synthesizing research and experience from leading choral-orchestral conductors and master children’s choir conductors. Children’s choir conductors will benefit from the range of information presented, including chapters on logistical considerations, repertoire selection, working with an orchestra, and preparing and rehearsing choral-orchestral music. In its entirety, this document becomes a pedagogical tool to guide children’s choir conductors through every step of preparing a concert with instrumental accompaniment.
