Design and implementation of policy server in single-domain policy-based network

Policy-based Network is the network on which the traffic management is achieved by applying policies in the network. A policy is a statement defining which traffic should be treated differently in the network. It is defined by an administrator and specifies the rules related to handling different types of traffic in the network. In traditional networks, all types of traffic are treated equally . Packets are either successfully transmitted or dropped depending on the availability of the network resource regardless of their type. Therefore, the quality of service required by different types of traffic cannot be guaranteed. However , by applying the policies in the network , network devices are specially configured to treat different types of traffic in different ways. Mission-critical traffic will get better treatment than non mission-critical traffic. Once a type of traffic is authorized to transmit over the network according to a predefined policy, this policy will be used to configure the network devices to allocate required network resource for this type of traffic. Therefore, the required Quality of Service (QoS) can be guaranteed. QoS refers to the capability of a network to provide required service to selected network traffic over various technologies. How to design and implement policy server to ensure QoS over a single-domain policy-based network is the main concentration in this project. In this project, four major components of the policy-based network architecture , namely, users, routers , meter and a centralized policy server, are first studied. Then the pol icy server for the single-domain policy-based network is designed and implemented. The policy server is one of the most important components in policy-based network. Based on the policies defined in the policy-based network, policy server can make decisions on allowing or denying different types of traffic on the network . In addition, it needs to configure routers to allocate required bandwidth for an admitted traffic. Therefore, it plays a major role in providing QoS on the network. A simulation model is created in OPNET environment for testing policy server and investigating the effectiveness of policy based network management.
