Lesson study: an alternative professional developement model for middle school science teachers
This study compares teachers' professional development desires to lesson study and their past professional development experiences. The subjects consisted of 31 teachers who participated in the Summer SEASAND (Science Educators Association of San Diego) Institute, 19 of which participated in a lesson study strand. A needs assessment and post-survey used a 1-3 Likert-type scale to identify teachers' professional development desires and post lesson study experiences. A pre-survey and focus group sessions were also employed. T -tests and means data were employed. The results indicate professional development teachers received prior to SEASAND and lesson study did not contain desirable and relevant elements of professional development. Researchers also concluded that the elements of professional development teachers desire are found in lesson study. Supplementary material for this thesis available at the CSUSM University Archives.
