The effects of first grade retention on reading
This study investigates the effects retention has on student's reading achievement. Four students currently in third grade who were retained in first grade (Group A) are the primary subjects in this study. To see whether these students were performing where they should be due to their extra year, Group A was compared to a group formed of students who were performing equally as low in first grade but had been promoted to second grade (Group B). Reading scores and teacher questionnaires were collected and analyzed. This study concludes that retention does not have significant effects on reading comprehension.
