West Hills Community College: TRIO Student Support Service Program evaluation

The West Hills Community College (WHCC) service area is located within Fresno and Kings County; among the six most impoverished counties in California. The percentage of first-generation college students at WHCC is 53.5%, compared to 46.1% throughout California. Although many programs on college campuses provide services, the Student Support Services (SSS) program is uniquely designed to address the needs of students from the service area. The purpose of this program evaluation was to explore performance measures and identify associations between SSS program services and the effectiveness on student academic success. The sample consisted of the fall 2005 cohort, or 43 students, enrolled in the WHCC SSS program. Findings showed a strong association between student participation in tutoring services and advising or counseling services, and academic achievement. Motivators and barriers for college retention were also identified. Recommendations for the content and delivery of the program for future practices are addressed.
