Effectiveness of Community Health Worker-Led Interventions for Hispanics/Latinos with Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Literature Review
The primary focus of this investigation is to synthesize glucose (HbA1c) outcomes of community health worker (CHW) led interventions designed for Hispanic/Latinos with type 2 diabetes. This systematic literature review aimed to summarize the randomized controlled trials by the characteristics of each intervention including the format of the intervention, program description, design framework, and its measured outcomes. Seven studies were identified and met the inclusion criteria using PubMed and Google Scholar databases. Six of these seven studies reported statistically significant improvements in HbA1c. The studies varied in format, duration of the intervention, and other measured outcomes. This review makes a case for further research focused on examining specific CHW characteristics that contribute to the effectiveness of the intervention and the best methods in which to integrate CHW interventions within healthcare systems.
