Exploring the impact of "reading" on reading

The purpose of this study was to test the impact of authentic reading on reading achievement and reading motivation. This study consisted of implementing an after-school reading club for a sample of first grade students to come and listen to an adult read aloud as well as engage in independent reading. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect data. Reading achievement was measured using running records to determine beginning and ending reading levels of participants. Reading motivation was measured at the start and conclusion of the study using The Motivation to Read Profile. In addition, reading attitudes were portrayed using anecdotal notes and observations collected by the researcher. Results indicate that the reading behaviors examined in this study do impact reading achievement and reading motivation.
