Hispano-Portuguese rivalry in the Molucca and Philippine Islands, 1521-1569.
It was not by chance that Portugal's Asian empire had a head start of nearly a quarter century before Spain entered its territory. The beginning of Portuguese expansion dated from the recapture of the Lusitanian Algarve from the Muslims in 1249 which preceded the Spanish equivalent by nearly 250 years. Moreover, a century before Ferdinand and Isabella unified most of Spain, Portugal had undergone political consolidation. The Aviz dynasty dated from 1385, when the Portuguese nation defeated the Castilian nobility at Alju- barrota. Like the Viking and Italian peoples, the Portuguese had centuries of maritime experience when the first Aviz took the throne.
