Redefining Black Masculinity: An analysis of Black masculinity and its effect on relationship satisfaction for Black couples

Based on hegemonic gender conceptualizations, Black couples are inundated with issues of sexism and racism that threatens to sabotage the formation of healthy relationships between black males and black females. This includes expressions of sexuality. This sabotage comes in the form of emasculating and stigmatizing black males and females, painting a picture of a deficient culture that promotes the formation of dysfunctional gender roles and unstable relationships. With restricted methods of expressing masculinity, Black males have discovered unique ways to express their own masculinity, as a counter to hegemonic masculinity. Dominant society sees this form of masculinity as aggressive and deviant. My study seeks to compare these two types of masculinities and test their effect relationship satisfaction.
